Several years ago, a friend shared a thought about Matthew 7:7 that stayed with me. The scripture says, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
She compared asking to praying, seeking to searching God’s Word for answers, and knocking to actually lifting our hand and doing something. I loved the idea that faith isn’t only about asking God for direction. We also seek His guidance and then do our part by moving forward in faith.
I wrote that thought in the margin of my Bible, and eventually it became the beginning of this song. Later, I took it to a speed cowrite with my friends Carolyn Cates, Charlene Beal, and Suzy P., where we were given the topic “Energy.” We talked about how taking steps toward the person we hope to become can bring energy and momentum into our lives. That conversation helped us finish the song and became part of the second verse.
I’m grateful to Carolyn, Charlene, and Suzy for helping me bring the song together, and to Becky Willard for bringing it to life with her vocals and production.
Ask, Seek, Knock is a joyful reminder that we can turn to God as we try to grow and make changes in our lives. We can ask Him for guidance, seek answers in His Word, and knock by taking action and moving forward in faith. I hope it encourages us to trust that God will be there as we work toward becoming who we are meant to be.
